I think it's very good if you could practice the electric and the acoustic guitar because when you know how to play with acoustic you find it much easier and lighter to play fast and clean electric stuff, and the electric is great to get to know the fretboard further than just the 12 first frets..

i started with clasic i think it's better to get your fingers stronger even if it's rougher with acoustic at the begining than take an electric and see your fingers fly and dont be disturbed bout the 12 fret thing if you can play 17'th well on acoustic you will play it better on elec. :)
