Hello everyone,
I'm 63 yrs young and have been trying to play guitar for 5 yrs now.I can usually learn the chords and rythm parts, but when it comes to learning/memorizing the solo part I have problems. Are there any tricks or methods to learning them other then playing them over and over again.
Thanks for any help.

Repetition is the only way to memorize anything.

Try learning the song in your head WITHOUT the guitar in your hands. Just listen to it and see if you can sing/whistle/hum along (even in your head) the notes of the solo. Once you know it that way, it's just a matter of learning the notes on the guitar. You'll already know what the solo sounds like, so it'll be easier.

Also, learn your solos by small chunks ( 2 or 3 measures ). When you know that part, tackle another small chunk.

Put a sound system were you sleep, even just a boom box. Play the tune you want to learn before you go to sleep or as you fall a sleep. That way it's the last thing on your mind and your mind will work on it as you sleep.

Kind of like thinking about something all day, then waking up the next morning knowing the answer.

That would keep me up all night. Can't fall asleep when I think about music.

There is so much that goes into soloing; the techniques, licks, etc. If the problem you are having is just remembering what you play, then I would suggest taking it in small bits and practice each part until you have it memorized. Don't move on to the next until it's ingrained in your fingers.

After doing this with a few solos you will notice how much quicker you can memorize licks and phrases. With time and patience it will get better that I can promise.

Is there a solo in mind you were trying to tackle?
