Is it good to be confused?

Well, I get really, really confused when people start talking about all these wierd types of things and styles of play. I was wondering if you learn that from a teacher or do you just pick it up as you go? I can't afford a teacher and I just started playing. I screw around with tabs right now just trying to learn a few songs that I like (Stairway, Hey You, stuff like that). I looked at the guitar lessons on a page and am learning the chords (slowly), but which is the better way to start? I have no idea what half the stuff said here means. That's normal for a newbie, right?

Yeah, its normal.

I knew a guy who used to drool over guitar specs in magazines months before he even picked up a guitar for the first time. Some people are guitar robots - with drooling capabilitys - this shows your human.

I hear you man!

I've been playing for a long time and don't know a lot about gear and theory.

So people just loose me when they get into double humbuckers with switchs and stuff. Don't get me started about amps, I can't even tell you the model of mine and I have it since 1998. And theory, well, about the same. Don't start talking about sus7 things and dissonance....

I just got by modes and still am not sure about all that.

The fact of the matter is that I don't care about those things. When I get home I plug my guitar and it works, that's all I need :) and sometimes a beer afterwards.

I bought a guitar the other day and the salesman begins to tell me about the pickups and the tremolo being a floyd Rose and just when he was getting the blue prints out :) I just told him " just plug the damn thing and let me play, if I like the feeling I'll buy it".

The thing I hate is when someone looks down on you because you don't know how to read music or the name of all the notes on the fretboard. Crap I play guitar, shouldn't that be enough!!! Wow that felt good....

Anyway that's why I stay on this forum, nobody here has ever look down on me even if I don't know this stuff. This is rare and we should thank the guys that keep this up more often. so thanks guys

'dude, your guitar doesn't have an active preamp? Wow, are those stacked humbuckers? How come your neck isn't scalloped?'

Plug guitar, play...

'Huh? How do you do that?'

Having your tone on the guitar comes a lot from your fingers, Van halen has recorded with a guitar that lots of guitarists would consider as non decent to play on...

A guitar,a pick, tab or music book and possibly an amplifier.

Anything else is unecessary (spl) and you can filter it out.
You're doing it right,if it feels good to you.

Accuracy,you say? hmm interesting concept..

A guitar - check (Hamer Slammer Les Paul immitation--BEAUTIFUL)
a pick - check (from Floater, my favorite band {aside from Zeppelin and Floyd})
tab - check (got to love the internet)
music book - not yet, think I'll pick up a Zeppelin book though
amplifier - check (don't know if it's good, but it's hell-a loud in my studio apartment! LOL, poor neighbors)

Yeah, I've just been ignoring anything that goes over my head. I figure that I'll get a handle on all the terms and crap as I go.

Nice Gear and EXCELLENT taste in music :)

Most Zep Tabs seem to be quite good. I think I had "Total Accuracy" tape and book of Zeppelin - Top stuff and quite obsessive!

Cheers.
