Telling the difference between notes and cords.

Ok, by the title you can tell I'm new at this.

How do you tell when look at sheet music if you are to play the note "C" or the cord "C"?

well - when looking at sheet music it is very simple.

I think he may mean the chord symbols that lie above the staff....in that case C would mean play a C major chord.
