Hi,

I'm a tad new to this.

I have a standard Aria start up strat with a 10W Marshall amp.

I have bought a Zoom G1xn effects pedal which is preset with 30 patches but most have too much gain & drive and despite playing with the effects I can't seem to get the right sound for any GNR solos.

It's frustrating to be honest.

Does anybody know the basic set up to slightly resemble the sound Slash produces (without buying a Les Paul Standard and whopping great Marshall Tube amps etc.).

Cheers.

Hmm. Slash's sound is actually not very special. The way that he play is though, it's hard to SOUND like him. (if you get what i mean) Now i don't really know what the particular amp you have sounds like. But to get Slash's sound, you need a good mid range frequenzy. So if there is an EQ on the amp, turn up the mid. For the gain i would suggest you, that you find the one that sounds most crunchy with most bite.
I think it's hard to replicate his sound with ''not to expensive'' gear. But i aint saying it can't be done :)

Good luck

Yeah, those were my thoughts when I first saw this post. I could be wrong, but I think for songs like "Sweet Child of Mine" he used the neck pickup position... but Caponi's right.. there's a lot going on in the fingers that's giving him his sound. Also, Marshall stacks at high/full volume can be hard to replicate as digital presets... I've recorded with a JCM 800 100w turned up full blast (it was "dog housed" so no, we weren't blowing our ears out) and its definitely quite different than just having a pedal or digital preamp. I also remember seeing a group called "The Smalls" live, and the guitarist there had an amazing rock/crunch sound... just sounded great, and he too was using a Marshall stack. After the show I asked him what effects he used, and he told me none, he was just going straight into the amp. So maybe try Caponi's suggestions, keeping in mind that Slash is very particular about his amps and guitars.
