slash says he uses a boss EQ to boost his solos. What does it do?
EQ (equalisation) is a fancy tone control. Instead of simple Bass/Midrange/Treble three-band controls, equalisers have 6, or 8, or as many frequency bands as you can pay for. Used before and/or after an effect (like distortion), this gives you more ways to contour the sound. Settings like the classic 'scooped mids' used for metal are easier to do with a good EQ.

Also...when you use a Guitar EQ (pedal) in an amp's effects loop, it boosts the signal before the power amp...making it very loud. This way, you can also customize your lead sound just the way you want it..and turn it off to go back to your rhythm tone/rhythm volume with one step of your foot!
