I have somewhat short fingers so stretching across 2 frets is somewhat of a problem. I think part of it is hand position. What fingers should I be using on my hand for what strings?

The length of your fingers doesn't really affect your guitar playing, but rather, the position in which you hold your hand.

Turn your hand over, so your palm is facing up. Point your index finger away from you, parallel to the ground. Uncurl your middle finger and slightly uncurl your ring finger, and make sure your pinkie is pointing towards you...

Your hand should vaguely resemble you holding a gun, with your finger on the trigger... lol

Then, play guitar like that!

You know how Freddy Kruger holds his gloved hand out? It's like all splayed out... That's the same position...

Hope this helps :O

I found the same thing but just kept at it and found that I could reach 3 frets away with some practice after thinking the first time that I would never be able to do that.

I do have to tilt the neck bit higher than normal to compensate for wrists and fingers that arn't so pliable at this stage.

I'd recommend that you check your overall sitting position (provided that you're not playing standing up). Try to stretch out your left arm a little further so that your left hand is not just reaching the neck but there's extra room instead. Then hold your thumb right behind the neck so it can support the pressure held by your fingers. I hope this helps too =)
