Hey guys I'm pretty new here. I'm just getting back into playing but its basically like just starting.

I'm running through simple chords on here and I'm struggling with them but getting there. The A Major, however, I cannot get. There is always a dead string somewhere. Any tips?

Also I am wondering how to figure out what the action is on my guitar. Could it be too high for a beginner? Also the guitar has been sitting and not being used for years so do you think the strings need changed probably? I may take it into the shop tomorrow since I will be out of town for a few days and not able to play. Don't want to sound stupid when I go in though.

If you are already considering it, then I would take it to the shop. They'll be able to get it set up. Don't worry about 'sounding stupid'. Just tell him/her you are starting up guitar and have this old one you'd like fixed up and a new set of strings on it. A basic set up won't cost much and will get you off to a good start.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

It depends on whereabouts you like your action and if it's comfortable for you ., everyone is different. But Razbo is right take it in if you're considering it.

A setup also includes a new fresh set of strings if you provide your own or they'll provide their own but it will cost you . I would also recommend making a post in the guitar tech section to for Steve because he really knows his stuff and he can give you some tips on what happens in a setup .

Most setups are easy but I was a victim of simple guitar setup that was botched and it caused only more problems . So a guitar setup can go bad from time to time . Just depends on how good the tech is

And he can address all your questions on setup and guitar problems and such .
I had a setup done on my first guitar and it was a cheap 125 robson acoustic ( Not even a brad name )

Anyways I had a setup done at a local guitar store and was not pleased ( The action was set very low but as a result the nut action was too low and it caused problem with buzzing and other problems arose .

Just ask Razbo how much I regreted not investing into a real good guitar when I first came to GT and all the frustrations I had eh Razbo :(.

Anyways I just got a brand new guitar for 1000$ Godin Multiac Spectrum SA .
The action isn't too bad on the high frets but around the 15 fret the strings are a little too high for me so I am taking it in a for a setup once my new hard case arrives .

In any case I will be asking Steve what errors I should look for after a setup that way I can get it fixed before paying for it
