I just started guitar lessons and wondered if anyone had any experiences, tricks, or lessons learned relating to where I am in my odyssey.
He started me out pretty quick. Natural notes(first position),2 malaguenas, 7 chords(E, Eminor, Aminor, B7, C, G, D) and learn IF I COULD BE LIKE THAT by three doors down. Is that normal?

No, kill him and hide the body.... ;)

That's the way I teach too. I take a tune that's way over my student's skill, because he'll have to make the effort to learn and remember all the chords...
I'd rather make them work their asses off to learn a real tune than playing "twinkle little star" in a week...(except for the kids, of course)

I told him I want to learn songs. But I want to learn the whole song, not just the main licks. I like to be able to play a recognizable song for my wife or kids.

work on improv, then you will be able to do anything... it builds technique, once you have technique, you feel comfortable enough to play stuff that you can really put feeling into. that's where you wanna be. i just got there recently:) rock on!

Here's my 2 cents worth. When I was learning basic chords, I found Hotel California by the Eagles to be invaluable! It has nearly ALL the basic chords in it and they're arranged in a manner that's easy to remember. Play the entire song until you can do it in your sleep and you will know Am, E, G, D, F, C, Dm7 off by heart! Plus you can play a great tune that everybody knows. I then took these chords and started writing songs. 15 years later, I'm still at it! :)
