There are dozens and dozens of effects pedals to choose from. What are the top 5 must haves for rock and blues playing?

Hey alan0819,

This is a great question! I guess it all depends on your style, but I've always got to have a good:

Overdrive
wah
compressor/sustain
delay
Looper (when there's no second guitarist, this is great for jamming)

It is a good question. I'm torn over the whole pedal thing, frankly, and try to use only true bypass so that - in theory - I have a more or less direct to amp as well as well as effects.

For me it's

Wah
Tuner
Overdrive
Compressor
Gate
Delay
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

Thank you all for your responses. I feel a Wah is a must have for rock, Overdrive and Dist is great too. I am confused and unclear on what Compression and Sustain can provide. Would appreciate some education on Comp and Sustain.

Here is a description of compresion pedals

Also...

I'm disappointed in you all  ... No mention of the root of killer tone. The Chorus pedal. :D  .. That is a must have pedal (IMHO). Probably more so than overdrive and or distortion. Sometimes a lot of chorus, sometimes a little chorus, regardless, I love the shimmer you get in your tone. :)

Overdrive is important - such as a tube driver - as well as the wah but I use delay alot also and a whammy pedal is a must. I do use chorus mainly on clean tones or ambient pad work - My pedal board changes all the time tho.
