Gibson SG Special 60s Tribute

Each month, www.guitartricks.com brings you news from the wonderful world of guitars – some good, some bad and some ugly. This month we bring you news on Razorlight, Guitar Hero world records, the new Gibson SG special 60s tribute and more...

UK band Razorlight have said goodbye to two founder members. Guitarist Bjorn Agren and bass player Carl Dalemo have agreed to an ‘amicable parting’ following unproductive recording sessions for a forthcoming album. Joining the sole surviving founder member Johnny Borrell will be Gus Robertson on guitar and Freddie Stitz on bass as they begin work on their new album and for live performances this summer.

Annie Leung of Irvine CA has just set a new world record for the highest score on a single track of Guitar Hero III by a female. She scored an incredible 789,349 playing ‘Through the Fire and Flames’ by Dragonforce – which has got to be about seven times what I can manage. Can’t help but think she would be better off spending the six hours per day she uses to practice Guitar Hero on a real guitar... but still, an amazing feat.

KT Tunstall has explained how busking the streets of Glasgow helped her develop her guitar chops. Before taking to the streets, she could only play whilst sitting down and hunching over to watch what her fretting hand was doing – a scene familiar to most of us I imagine. Performing for people broke this habit and she now admits to finding it hard to play sat down. So a baptism of fire it may be, but performing really will take you to a whole new world of guitar playing.

Gibson have announced the SG Special 60s tribute, inspired as the name suggests by the SG used by guitarists including Pete Townsend, Carlos Santana and Tony Iommi equipped with P-90 pickups. Available in worn white, ebony and cherry as well as a living room table (natural) finish the $1299 RRP will also get you a gig bag. Looks like a nice guitar and a ‘proper’ Gibson that you won’t have to sell your car to buy... gotta be worth a look.

A new app for iPhone and iPad called ‘Rock Prodigy’ has been released in the US, with a UK release date imminent. It uses pitch recognition technology to give you feedback on your playing of a real guitar and tracks by big name bands including Smashing Pumpkins, Megadeth and Lynyrd Skynyrd are available. Using a TAB style system to display the notes to play the app has four skill levels and is free... it’s the tracks you pay for at $2.99 each.

Daisy Rock have introduced the Stardust Elite Rebel, offering comfort and style for females looking for a quality guitar. The Stardust Elite Rebel Standard is the base model and features the standard lightweight construction, ‘Slim & Narrow’ neck design as well as a lightweight Sengon body, a 22 fret 24-3/4” maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. A double cut Les Paul in styling with 2 humbuckers, a tune-o-matic bridge and 3-way toggle switch, it is only available in Cherry. A nice looking guitar but I’m not sure that it works on a dude who’s 6’ 2”.
