22 fret vs 24 fret electric guitar

Was just wondering if it makes a difference. I am just starting out, but also plan to get a pretty decent starter electric guitar.

Electrics will generally come in 21, 22 or 24 frets depending on the brand and model. 24 frets gives you 2 full octaves on the fretboard and are popular with the Metal crowd.

Having 24 frets will not change the scale length (distance between nut & bridge), it will not enhance your sound, tone, or, unfortunately, one's own ability. Nor does it indicate, in and of itself, that the guitar is of a high quality.

I have guitars in each type, and there is really no difference in playing one over the other unless you specifically need those specific notes high up in the register.

That's my opinion, anyway.

For a starter, it wouldn't really matter too much if you had a 24 fret guitar. You will be learning mostly down on the other side of the neck anyways. 24 frets just gives you that extra octave like Razbo said. I've never owned one, but I want one because a lot of the solos I'm trying to play go up to those higher frets.

22 frets is a cat scream, because it wants you to feed it.


24 frets is a cat screaming because your parked on its tail and thats what it gets because its demanding food.

Number of frets is probably less important than the accessibility of the frets high up in the register. It takes a fairly large hand to get around the heel of a Les Paul or the neck/body joint of a Strat for frets above 18 or so. Many newer body styles have deeper cut-aways and contoured neck/body joints that make accessing the upper registers much easier.

The other consideration is sound. The neck pickup has a very different sound when it sits under what would be the 24th fret as opposed to under what would be the 26th fret.
