Metallica, in my mind, is one of...if not THE best metal and hard rock band there is out there. Of course that is my opinion. Discuss your opinion here.

Best or worst....you decide

( also I bet I can answer any metallica question you guys have, even the hardest of the hard questions about those guys. I can answer them. So go ahead and ask if you want. )

Why did Lars change the sound of his snare drum?

I respect the band for what they have achieved, but, I've never been a big fan. Maybe it's because I really ever had a chance to appreciate them, radio overplayed them and burnt me out on them. There for a while I could not turn on the radio without hearing Metallica.

I liked them up until the black album. Everything after that I just can't get into.

I really like them but Metallica is one of those bands which have always been around, I already knew them before I knew them, there's not a particular Metallica-sound that I like, although Ride the Lighting is high on my list

come to think of it, I've listened a lot of Metallica but somehow I don't really know them, I think that's because I always randomly listen to any of their songs and never got any special memories with one given song/album, when I play guitar I just play some of their songs just because of the same reason most of us learn to play 'Nothing Else Matters', it's a part of playing guitar

weird, I listened way more Metallica than In Flames/Arch Enemy/Slayer etc. but I somehow it doesn't feel like it

No offense, but I remember when I used to think exactly like you. I started listening to Metallica in the 6th grade. Up until High School they were my favorite band. I bought anything that had to do with them, Kirk was my idol, I learned all their songs (minus the solos) by High School, new everything about them, ect.

Once I started getting into music, understanding it more and listening to other bands, I realized that...... well.......Metallica just isn't that great. My opinions all changed in HS when my friend gave me a CD. It was the soundtrack to the "Last Action Hero" movie (amazing CD btw). One of the songs on there was by Megadeth.

Long story short, Megadeth is now my all time favorite band. Nobody in Metallica can even touch the skill of some of the people in that band. Mustaine destroys all of them, and when they had Friedman....well, there is just no competition. If you don't listen to Megadeth, do yourself a favor and get a CD. "Rust in Peace" is their best album.

Sure I can respect them and I like most of their albums. I even like some stuff AFTER the black album. Once they made S&M, that and every album after that sucked. They are definitely not the best metal/hard rock band out there. That's for sure. They can be your favorite, but it doesn't mean they are the best at what they do.

I saw metallica open for honeymoon suite and Y&T on thier first american tour.

basically Nobody in the crowd knew who they were, but they simply blew everone away,, they were so loud and fast for those times.. and were the main topic after the concert in the parking lot.

I think they reached their peak with 'Master of Puppets',, not long after that other bands jumped on the hard and fast bandwagon, so metallica was no longer fresh ,new and groundbreaking. I will say that I still liked them better than most hair-metal at the time,But I wanted more 'Master of Puppets'... that didn't happen.

I enjoy listening to Metallica. They have some songs I really like. I agree with almost everything Hunter said. There are some bands out there better than Metallica but that does not take away from all the success they have had. For all the success they have had over the years is something I really respect!

I love Metallica and I know they got a lot of flack for Load and Reload, but they actually pretty good records.

I'll say this, if anyone other than Metallica released those albums, they'd be enjoying a lot of praise. It's just that Metallica set the bar so high for themselves and established a standard, and when they explored a different creative direction, they got lambasted for it.

I'm refering to Lars' drum sound, he changed it once durring load but quickly switched back , the infamous St. Anger drum set ( tin can sounding snare drum set ) then he changed it back to a more metal/hard rock sounding drum sound for Death Magnetic ( oh by the way they are gonna start work on a new album in april or may of 2011!!!)

I consider each album to be an era ( i.e 2003/2008 is the st. anger era. 1996/1997 is load album and so on and so on)

I love Metallica! They're the best Metal band around! I'm not so keen on the drums... But they're still my favorite band! My favorites are St Anger(album), Enter Sandman, King Nothing.... Lol it goes on forever! They're my main influence.

Metallica is my favorite band and I looked up to them as my guitar heroes and everything I wanted to play guitar.

But now I've became an intermediate/early advanced guitar player I must say that from a musicians perspective Metallica gets a bit boring technically. Kirks solo's sound great, but are mostly only pentatonic, which is fine by any means but a bit boring after a while. Also James' rythm playing is incredible, fastest downpicker in the world ( if you don't know what I'm talking about search for Fight Fire With Fire live in Mexico 2009 ).
But that also, even if it is fast as hell, is just nothing more then downstrokes all the way.

As a guitar player my interest got more to blues and, no offense, Megadeth. Dave Mustaine is also a great musician ( and I don't wanna hear any stupid Megadeth vs Metallica comments on that one, the rivalry between the bandmembers already ended. They peformed together on Sonisphere with the Big 4.... was just too awesome ). Also Chris Broderick and Marty Friedman are for me just examples of anything I hope to achieve in my guitar playing.

But just considering the music, I still like Metallica A LOT. Still my favorite band around. Even though Lars' drumming kinda sucks nowadays hehe. Death Magnetic for me was a fresh revive of the band. Glad Trujillo's on board, most awesome bassplayer and would say almost as good as Cliff :-)

+1. Trujillo rules and I think he's very underrated. As good as Cliff? Hmmm...I hold Cliff so high up, so its tough for me to say that!
