I am reminded of something a Country Music player once told me about how he knows what kind of a bar he has wandered into...

"If the music sounds so sad you can't stand it, you're in a Blues bar.

If it sounds so loud you can't stand it, you're in a Rock bar.

If it sounds so good you can't stand it, you're in a Country bar.

If you've been there for twenty minutes, the band is still playing the same song, and you still have no idea what song they're playing, you're in a Jazz bar."

I'm sorry, lalimacefolle, I need strong melody to feed my need.

That's his own signature model from Carvin (called the fat boy)

Allan HOLDSWORTH is a legend among guitarists. Even if his music is weird (trust me, you get used to it, and once you learn how to appreciate it, it sends shivers down your spine) Satch, Van Halen, and lots of others think he is the greatest guitarist to ever walk on earth. I have put this link here because I know he isn't very famous even among guitarists, but he sets standards for tone, phrasing, and sheer technique (he blows away all the shredders and all the guys whose name end with AI or NI, has you can see an this video.)
I hope I will turn some of you to buy some of his CDs, since he doesn't make lots of money like he should. He even considered having a day job!

He reminded me of 'back in the day' when my band would take a break from practice, and our drummer would borrow my guitar and sit in font of my amp with it. He couldn't play a lick to save his soul, but he made some really interesting sounds. The thing is, without structure, even the most carefully crafted sound is just noise. This discussion follows the same path as the debate about the crap that 'artistes' fob off on a gullible public as 'art'.

I used to have an old magazine clipping of an interview that was given by Pablo Picasso in his later years. He explained that he was simply a performer, who played upon the vanities of the idle rich, and shamelessly duped them into paying ludicrous amounts of money for paintings they wanted because they wanted them, not because they had any artistic merit. Its sad, really, because the man had real talent, in that he was able to capture expressive, recognisable images with a few deft brush-stokes. But there was no money for such 'photographic' artistry... he had to resort to buffoonery to make a living with his paintings. Cubism was, to the visual arts, as a carny sideshow is to Olympic-class gymanstics.

I think you really didn't go to the point where he starts soloing, because he can play some licks...

its true sometimes it does take time for some music to grab you, about 20 years ago infact it was 1979 i was a steward at a dylan concert, at wembley there was a time i couldnt stand the guys music, but by the end of the fifth gig i was sold on the guy, previously i had not realy listened to his music, but standing there for 5 gigs helped me listen more intently, so lali is right give the guy a good listening to before passing judgement, rock on guys.
