i keep seein questions bout scales n relationships.
this is for you guys who are not beginners but still
not 'masters'. if you want to understand the difference
between major &minor ya gotta understand how theyre
built. i recomemend that you first learn just one key.
G is the easiest thing to do i think on guitar.ya
remember do-ra-mi-.... in G its G A B C D E F# n G again.
ok so ...ya see that all the strings will play in the
open position.well....lets see...the first note in the key of G is ...you guessed it .G....the second is 2 frets ( one step ) higher...A....the third is another step higher ..B
then a half-step ( one fret ) C....step up to D ..step up
E ..step up to F#...so the pattern to a major scale is
from the root ( in this case G ) step step halfstep ..step step step halfstep... well all this is good...the way to make a 'chord' is to play the 1st 3rd & 5th....GBD r the notes in the G chord.now lets move up to start on the 2nd in the key of G...that would be A....and if we do the step step halfstep trick startin on the A we see that the 3rd note we play is a C#, which is NOT in the key of G. we must
FLAT the 3rd, ( which is by definition how to make a minor )
if we play A B C D E F#G A ...what we have is the A minor in the key of G.. so ..learn to play the notes in the key of G with your index finger on the second fret...one finger per fret.....then learn to play the notes in the key of G with your index finger at the 5th fret.....then again with your index finger at the 7th fret..again at teh 9th. and once again at the 12th fret....and learn all the notes in the key of G all over the fingerboard and connect them ....play a G chord and then play the first pattern...play a Am and then the 2nd pattern...the Bm with the 3rd pattern .. play a C with the 2nd pattern also..then play a D with the 3rd & 4th patterns...Em plays at the 3rd & 5th patterns. the F#m is diminished ( the 5th is flat also) so i will not take you there yet dont wanna make this
any more difficult than it needs to be to get ya started.
anyhow..once ya have this burnt into yer brain ya can move everything up one step to A....or down to F...ya see ?
