Hey all. I'm 33 and taking up guitar for the love of it. I know a little (very little) and I've dinked around with the guitar to the point where I know a few basic chords and scales. How do you move the scales up and down the fret board? Are they always the same only a different starting point or do they change? And how do you know what key it is in? Thanks.

welcome friend...
um, i was gonna attempt to explain... but it's late... I think you'll get a better response if you post under the "guitar basics" part...
About scales, basically if you play something like cmaj, when you move it up 2 fretts (up to fretts meaning in the direction of the bridge, higher notes, I'm not being condicending, it just it was something that confused me when i first started...) it becomes dmaj, and it keeps it's same pattern... basically you'r intrested in the pattern in the scales and the note which the scale starts with (the root note)... the pattern stays the same (well for all of the scales I know anyway... oh whith out venturing into jazz or anything like that).. the scales that you learn are usually one octave scales (eg from C to C), but there are some that are two octave, but again this pattern stays the same, and the name of the scale changes depending on how far up or down the fret it is moved...
Hope this helped...
I'm pretty sure there's someone else who can do a better job of explaining it than i can....

Scales:
Starting point of the scale is the ROOT, that's what is also called the key of the song that's based on the scale.

Here is C

-----
-----
-----
-----
-3---
-----
Then you have to actually play the scale (the patterns on the fretboard) They change depending on which scale you are playing (major, minor, or modes, among others) but for C major, C minor, etc, the starting point is C
here's C major

-----------------------5-7-8------
------------------5-6-8-----------
------------4-5-7-----------------
------3-5-7-----------------------
-3-5-7----------------------------
----------------------------------
If you want to change Key, go up or down the fret board, but keep the same pattern (add two to every number to play for D major for example, add 4 to play in E, etc.).

I won't give you other patterns, since they are everywhere on this site and on the net

yeah, that what i was trying to explain... maj scales have a set pattern, minor scales also have a set pattern but it's different...
So all the major scales have the same pattern as each other, just that they start at different places...
All the minor scales have the same pattern as each other, just they start from different places..
The note from which the scale starts from (the root note) give the scale it's name... So as c maj starts from C and uses the pattern of a major scale... Cmin starts from C and used the pattern of a minor scale...
