So the question is- has another total newbie signed up and found GT to be as helpful as they say they are? And once you get past the initial frustrations does it get easier?
Total Newbie- Will GT really help?
Ok- maybe I did sound a little skeptical but I'll blame it on my music illiteracy. I know my way with a guitar as much as I can fly a Greek spaceship. I can't read music either. But I know I have the capacity and passion to learn so I went ahead and purchased a guitar.

Hi... I've been here for two years. I had no 6 string guitar experience at all when I started. I did have some music theory from my jr high and high school days when I was in band. Also dabbled a little with the bass guitar right out of high school.
All that just to say, yes. This site has taught me a LOT. More about music theory than I ever knew back in school. There are lots of great videos. Lots of excellent instructors to help you along the way.
I've gone from not even knowing how to play happy birthday on the guitar to creating my own songs (sorry, nothing to share).
HAVING SAID ALL THAT.
You get out of it what you put into it.
I'd suggest you try it for at least one month.

2.5 years ago my GF gave me a cheap acoustic for my birthday. A week later I bought an electric starter pack and tried to play" master of puppets" lol. so I joined GT and started with learning how to hold my pick (cause I wasn't quite sure how) Since then I've bought 2 more guitars 2 amps, looking to buy another one and I still can't play that dam song. But I learned to play lots of other stuff and really enjoy it.

If this site didn't provide to me what I needed/wanted, I would have stopped paying a long time ago. A funny truth also... I will go weeks and weeks without even watching a video here on GT. But, when I want to watch one, or several, I know I have access to them.
Also, I like having access to all the forums.

It will save you alot of money in the long run. Get all the basics out of the way for 15 a month rather than 65 for "live" lessons. Me I do both a couple mounths of "live" lessons then a few months off depending on time and money.
Who? lol
You can start playing and making up songs after learning a few basic chords( I did anyways which only took a month 'ish ) they probably won't make the charts but it's fun and encouraging

dougjt you're setting yourself up..if I don't write a local-pub hit in 30 days of joining I'm coming to park in your parking spot..that'll teach ya :)
Seriously, thanks for the encouragement y'll. I checked out the lesson videos and they're really cool- like the loop feature (aka dummy feature - repeat till you get it)
