hey guys

im after a little help with scales, ive just completed the scales lesson on funddamentels level 2, and want to build all my own scales, from A to G major and minor, i know i can smash it into google and get a million hits but id rather do it myself,

say i want to build a A major scale i use the "ws ws hs ws ws ws hs" theory and say start from the A on the 5th string and then i drop a string after 3 notes and bring it up 5 frets and so on and so forth, does that work for all major scales no matter what key? and will that technique work no matter what A i start with say even if for instances i start with the A on the 17th fret 6th string i know my fretboard isnt long enought but you get my drift, and so on a so forth with all the major scales and then use the minor scales with the "ws hs" theory and they all work the same.

i hope i got my idea across without to many difficulties, thanks in advance,

stew :D

Hmm, I'm not sure working on similar stuff myself. It seems to me depends on what mode you start in. I've been working the g major down the neck by following notes. Not sure if this is right but sounds right.

Confusing indeed.
We should wait for more reply's since I partially hijacked your thread :)

Yes. :)

The formula is the defining characteristic of a scale. Pick a root note, put the circled 1 of the scale pattern on that note, apply the proper whole step, half step formula to the fretboard and you are on your way.

See these for help:
