Hey Steve, here's a simple solution. When you want to play a particular song, just put the song on you stereo system and play/jam over it. Sure we can hear the original guitar behind what you play (its a good thing for timing by the way) but its better then nothing.
When you get to the stage where you want to improv, having the original track with the guitars on it is a good way to try to improvise while trying to "fit" with the other guitar and the rest of the band

If you film yourself playing with the original track behind you, nobody will say: "wow that sucks"....everyone does it :)
Just put the volume a bit lower then your amp so its you we hear the most.
