That IS a shocker! His message did a really good job of explaining things though. After so many years, it isn't surprising to be burnt out on something. I'm sure he'll do great in whatever he does, but I'm wondering how Dream Theater will be now without him. No doubt very different.

I know...

Kind of bothers me that the rest of the band is so head strong that they can't take a break for a year to let the guy have some time and space. I can't imagine that the band is financially dependent on constant work. After this many years in the business, I'd have to imagine they all have made a substantial amount and have the financial ability to take some time off.

Makes me wonder if there were other issues at play as well.

Ya the way he words it, it almost sounds like the other band members are dependent on DT and can't take break from it, which doesn't add up. Choices are to either take a break, or to lost Portnoy.....and I don't see how they could have chosen this option unless something else was up.

Also, just noticed that on that same page, it lists that the DreamTheater.com domain name is for sale. On ebay for $90,000. Wonder what that's about.

Nothing.. That is not the bands official website. That is a fan site. Their official site is www.dreamtheater.NET. Which also talks about Mike's departure from the band.

I read about it just this evening, I was shocked to say the least... how the hell is Dream Theater gonna go on without Portnoy..? cmon! I think he did a great job explaining his departure, but I'm rather curious about why they didn't let him have his space..
already a guy in my pub is frantic about him playing in Avenged Sevenfold.. honestly I don't care, it's difficult imagining Portnoy in any other band than Dream Theater, without a doubt he'll change any other band's sound for sure! :D
= good music is good drinking =

Wait....WHAT? I didn't know he went to be Avenge's drummer. That's just weird. Not to bash on them, but that seems like a step down.....or just a really awkward step in general for Portnoy. I knew he was with them for studio stuff, but didn't think he'd be the replacement.

Yeah I knew he did some work with them. I'd like to see him do something other than 7Fold.
