i'm having a little trouble with the basic index finger barre. it's ok on the 5th fret but on some of the other frets not all of the other notes ring clearly. they're muted. what can i do to improve my barre?

Hi Ordepman,

For me, the key is to make sure that I'm rolling my index finger out to the side a bit, so as to create an angle where the bonier part of my finger is pressing the strings. This would be the side of the finger closer to my thumb. This allows the best contact with all the strings.

Hand strength and finger dexterity, through practice.

You'll get it.

Youtube it, it is hard to explain it. The guys have pointed out some important factors, but it is good to see it. Try to make your hand feel comfortable with the chords, don't apply to much tension, concentrate on how comfortable you feel with the chord, change the position of your fingers, fiddle with it, get curious. - the thing is to built up only the right amount of muscular tissue where needed. Good luck :)
