Calloused Fingers
I am starting out playing the guitar and I am having trouble with keeping my fingers off strings as I play simple C or G major chords. Sometimes it sounds mufffled. How long has members taken to get these down. I know where my fingers are supposed to go but the fingers still muffle the other strings. Will my fingers become so calloused that they cause better tension on the individual strings?

It will take a month or two then things will be a lot better. Keep practicing everyday until it all comes together.

Can't add much to that.
Don't play when your fingers are particularly soft, such as after doing dishes or taking shower. Or just stop doing the dishes and showering. :D
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

Appreciate the info. I kind of figured that once my fingers get adjusted, it would be easier to hit the notes and not muffle the other strings.

Thumb positioning is the most important aspect of chordal playing for those just starting out. The best thing to do is to keep the thumb of your left hand behind the second finger on the back of the fretboard. Also make sure your thumb is not over the top of the fretboard pointed towards you. keep it around the middle of the neck.
I'll be working out a free video which explains proper positioning. Hope this helps for now.
All the best,

As an added bonus, I seem to have lots of room around me for my stage presence.
