I have been working on my tone for a few years. the first thing I did was realize what my place was in the band. I am a rhythm player so I don't need to sound like Hendrix. First look at the guitar you are playing. Humbuckers or single coil? that makes tone. Your amp makes tone. Newer digital amps have all kinds of settings that you have to play with to find your tone. Pedals make tone. the trick is every time you change one thing, everything else sounds different. you have to decide who you want to be. Or be able to change everything to change tone between songs while on stage. Good Luck
