I'll try to help.
About powerchords. They're really fun and easy to play but they don't apply to all styles of music. Metal will use them by the truck load. If you pick up any Metallica tab you'l see, that's almost all they play. (I first learn with Metallica so I got a hold of powerchords early).
You've learned three chords so far, that's good. In fact it's better than when I started. I learned your basic chords 6-7 years after I started playing guitar. Yeah, I know I'm not a role model :)
The thing is that by playing chords you'll open yourself to new styles. Powerchords may limit your possibilities as it did for me. I couldn't play your basic chord progression. I was limited to one style for a long time.
One other thing is learning chords will help you build more strengh and stretch your fingers more. You'll gain more dexterity with chords than with powerchords.
So I suggest you stick with chords. Try to learn all chords ( C-D-E-F-G-A-B )and minor chords. With these, you'll have a good foundation. You'll be able to jam with friends. Always remember a lead guitarists is only as good as his rhythm guitarists is. Try to become a good rhythm player and then concentrate on lead. In other words learn to walk before learning to run.
For more help I'll need to know which style you want play.
