Having bought a digital recorder, it came with a basic version of Cubase. Being very pleased with the pre-amped sound of my new guitar (LAG DCE333), I'm wondering whether it would work to record straight into Cubase by plugging the output of the guitar into the mic socket of my laptop.

Would this

(a) produce a good effect
(b) kind of work, but not be worth the effort
(c) blow something on the laptop...

?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Plugging directly into your lap-top isn't a great idea for several reasons. For one, the signal from your guitar to your computer needs a buffer in between to get the right signal from your guitar. Also, you want to use some sort of pre-amp from an interface or POD to warm up the sound a bit and balance out the signal. It is best to use an interface of some sorts between your guitar and the computer, otherwise you get a very weak and thin signal that won't sound good. You can get interfaces for your guitar for as little as $100 or less. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice - would the preamp on the guitar itself do this job? It produces a great sound run straight into an amp. My concern is more about damaging anything!

You aren't going to damage anything honestly. If it sounds good plugged in, than yes plug it in and go for it. Have fun! :)
