Yes, every scale type has it's own unique formula that translates into a fretboard shape you can move around the guitar at will. All 12 possible major scales have the same shape, but start on a different note.

[QUOTE=dougjt]also if I understand it right if I can move these boxes any were on the fretboard and they never change shape.

Yes, the shapes are moveable. Place the root note (the circled 1) on any given note, and then you are playing the (insert name) scale in that key.

Since every scale type has a formula, you can and should apply it across the fretboard. This means that you can play the pentatonic minor scale (or any scale) starting on all 12 possible musical letters. If you play the first pentatonic box with the root note (the circled 1) on the note A you will get an A minor pentatonic scale:

E |---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|
B |---|---|---|---|-5-|---|---|-7-|---|---|---|---|
G |---|---|---|---|-3-|---|-4-|---|---|---|---|---|
D |---|---|---|---|-7-|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|
A |---|---|---|---|-4-|---|-5-|---|---|---|---|---|
E |---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|

If you play the first pentatonic box with the root note (the circled 1) on the note B you will get a B minor pentatonic scale:

E |---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|
B |---|---|---|---|---|---|-5-|---|---|-7-|---|---|---|---|
G |---|---|---|---|---|---|-3-|---|-4-|---|---|---|---|---|
D |---|---|---|---|---|---|-7-|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|
A |---|---|---|---|---|---|-4-|---|-5-|---|---|---|---|---|
E |---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|

If you play the first pentatonic box with the root note (the circled 1) on the note C you will get a C minor pentatonic scale:

E |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|
B |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-5-|---|---|-7-|---|---|---|---|
G |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-3-|---|-4-|---|---|---|---|---|
D |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-7-|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|
A |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-4-|---|-5-|---|---|---|---|---|
E |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|

And so on.

Every scale works this way on the guitar.

Learn the fretboard shape and move it around to start the root note on all 12 musical alphabet letters (A - G#) and you can play all 12 major scales with the same shape. Or minor scales, pentatonic major, pentatonic minor, or harmonic minor, etc.

Make sense?
