Hi! Im new of course.

I was just wondering if anybody could give me tips on how to teach others to play guitar. Just like all the little basics and stuff.

The person who I going to try to teach plays the piano very well so shes not completly new to music.

Any tips?

You could try going thru the fundamentals here and see how GT does it...?

Personally, I'd just have her jump right into it. Find a simple song she knows, and start with that. Move on to the next song, and she can learn what she needs along the way.

Usually a person wanting to learn wants to play!, so hold off on the theory unless she's asking for it, or hits a point where she needs to know it.

I am not an instructor by the way.

Buy a beginner guitar book and work through it with her.

Again, just my opinion: Probably give a run thru on the major & minor chords, but don't focus on having all of them memorized. Make it only a part of the lesson. Run thru the major & minor chords at the beginning, then focus on the 3 chord special she's starting out with (avoiding those nasty bar chords until she builds strength). As she needs the rest of the chords, she'll get fluent with them (able to hold them well and change quickly, etc).

Make sure she as a cheat sheet with all the chords on it, though. She'll do what ever she's motivated to do, so helping make that easy with chord grids available to her would be a great idea. Maybe get her to draw out the fretboard and write on it all the natural notes. It's going to be important for her to visualize that difference between piano & guitar, which is that you can play the same note many places.

All of this depends a lot on what she wants to do and what type of music she wants to play. If she just wants to strum & play some songs, then you can almost eliminate theory. If she wants to play classical, then it's going to take a different approach.

Me, I just wanna play! So I take the theory in small doses and I get along just fine. :)

I think the way Christopher Schlegel (hope I spelt that right) teaches the Guitar Fundamentals is fantastic, very very easy to follow etc. Its far below my skill level, but I was impressed at how simple he made everything.

I've struggled when trying to teach others basic guitar (most probably due to impatience) but I've learned a whole lot just about teaching by viewing the tutorials on this site.

Anders Mouridtzen also has a great style of teaching... In fact, all of the various tutors I've checked out so far on this site are great.

I would say start with using the Guitar Fundamentals 1 and 2 courses. Its UBER basic, but its gives a wonderful foundation from the get go.

Yeah, I agree. I'm following Christopher Schlegel's guitar fundamentals and it's going very well. Now, this girl won't do as well on an empty stomach so you should probably take her to lunch or dinner. Then after you both confess to diggin each other, you'll find out if she really cares to learn guitar or just wanted to see you, and vice versa. ;)
Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.
