I don't know how common it is to use your thumb for tapping but I have found it has a great deal to recommend for it, it isn't just to look posy, some shapes it makes some things a hell of a lot easier.
Try tapping a first inversion minor shape with your right hand, no luck.. ? Me neither until I realised that you can use the thin pinch harmonic edge side of your thumb (near the nail) to tap the lowest string and play the other notes with your 1st and 2nd fingers. The stretch between your thumb and 1st finger is massive. Since then my thumb's got better at it and I can thumb tap near the middle of the fretboard without setting off lower strings. There are loads of applications for your thumb, you could use your thumb and 1st and 2nd fingers for scales if you wanted.
Have fun!
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

As a bassist I have to say that the right thumb is indeed very useful.
