Guitar size

I need advice as to the size of the future guitar to buy. I am of average size however evertime I pick up a guitar to get a feel the large seems too large for comfort.
I am a beginner but do not want to get something too small if the correct way is to start off right.

This is where it gets fun. Go to a guitar store, decide a price range and play them all! To my personal feel Les Paul shapes seem to feel smallest body in height and length. SG's seem to be thinnest. Don't let looks stop you. I didn't like telecasters for a long time because of looks, I finally played one and loved it. Now I must get one soon.

First off, are you talking about an acoustic or electric?
