I thought the PodX3 was USB 2.0 compatible digital converter etc...with all the right bit rates etc. Doesn't it even come with a download of 'Farm' stuff as plug ins for whatever DAW you have (pending compatibility etc)?

Not to say that you shouldn't go with the 'Overkill' solution, I'm always game for any solution that's overkill. I would be more apt to spend the money on a DAW like Cubase or whatever preference you might have and get an M Audio Fast Track.
