Nobody will probably know the greatest player as a lot is taste and style plus it could be someone nobody has ever heard of sitting in his room playing alone to perfection.

Ya I try to keep a low profile. Don't want the media swarming me. You know how it is.

The original with the compiler's justifications for their positions is here

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time

Rolling Stone later published a 25 most underrated list
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/10/01/the-twenty-five-most-underrated-guitarists

I claim no resposibility for any ofthese opinion!

That first list lost all credibility when Kurt Cobain was ahead of Knopfler and EVH.

John Fahey @ 35 and Frank Zappa @ 45!

This is surely a work of fiction!

Never got to jacked up about such lists. Everyone has the 'why isn't...?' kind of things. I read the lists if they have justifications simply because it's interesting and don't take much stock in the actual list itself.

I am more partial to the 25 MOST UNDER-RATED LIST. I find it interesting that Robert Fripp is on both lists. At any rate, missing on the list:

Michael Hedges
Adrian Belew
Jeff Parker
Charlie Hunter
........and more!

Clearly my opinion. YEAH! :D

the order on that list is a joke for sure...didn't see prince on there...he's pretty good last I checked...johnny greenwood from radiohead should be on there...he's a very innovative guitarist and musician over all...bill corgan is another very underrated guitarist...having Kurt on there is like (but not quite as bad) as having Bob Dylan on a top vocalists of all time list...Kurt was a good player, love his music...but there's no way that he is better at guitar than van halen, and I hate van halens music...except the beat it solo, I dig that...

Not to mention

Phil Keaggy - should be in the top five - don't believe me? Check out Agora (The Marketplace) , or his song Doin' Nothing . This guy was phenomenal. Even in those songs, he puts a tremendous range of technique, and lot of it is just impromptu.

Joe Satriani - the teacher of Kirk Hammet. Why isn't he there?

Steve Vai - crazy guitar technique. Goes a little overboard on that, but he's way above 99% of guitarists.

Buckethead - this guy has crazy sounds, and puts out a huge amount of material. If you want to learn new and different sounds for guitar, check this dude out.

He had partial paralysis in the 3rd&4th fingers so he played his leads with 2 fingers. I probably would have never listen to his music had I not severed a tendon in my hand, and I may not have ever pick up a guitar again.

Check out Limeshouse Blues and Minor Swing on my space. He's really one of the greatest ever.
