Surely I can't be the only one out there craving some surf (??)

Any suggestions on surf scale/s (i.e., solo example's) would be great. I keep hearing pentatonic minor is all ya need to know. I can play that scale up and down the neck and forward and backward in time at decent tempo, but can't seem to capture that ol classic surf vibe.

If you haven't come across this, I recommend Phrygian Dominant.

1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7

It's called Phrygian "Dominant" because it's just the Phrygian mode with a raised 3 (which gives it the tritone between the 3 and 7 like a Dominant 7 Chord).

And pick really close to the bridge. It's totally cliché but fun.

You can also make Lydian Dominant with the same trick (just lower the 7 in Lydian). You can hear Lydian Dominant in the Pee Wee's Big Adventure soundtrack.

Carl: Thanks so much.....one minor problem - what language is it that you speak?

Is there a lesson on in the Guitar Tricks bag of goodies that provides examples/lessons of which you speak?

Of the genre's and associated lessons listed in this site I'm disappointed there's not more surf information/lessons....its (to me) a lot more than just tremelo picking.

Thanks!

Neal just recorded The Ventures' version of the Batman theme. It has some solos in it, might give you some ideas. It should be ready in about two weeks.

yeah i was hoping for a lot more surf / rockabilly lessons and was disapointed in the videos in those catagorys, real short vids of just someone playing a lick with no lead in or explanation or theory. where most of the other styles of music are much more indepth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5EZgJweGt0&feature=player_embedded i ordered 2 e books by this guy on rockabilly fantastic books and a good teacher, would be stoked if you could get him on board for some rockabilly lessons, http://www.the-jime.dk/Intermediate_Rockabilly_Guitar_Lessons.htm

i'm sure some of your current teachers could turn out some great rockabilly lessons i've just not heard much .

A lot of it comes down to picking, I play in a surf band and it's the lead guitarist's picking style that makes his blazing leads sound the way they do vs straight up metal or rock. He also decided to start playing surf after buying a fender jaguar, so getting a jangly guitar like that might help.
