At the moment I'd say Jeff Loomis.

What is the criteria for the best guitarist?
Who can play the fastest or the most complicated piece?
Maybe what they contributed to the guitar world, or who influenced who.
Is there a particular genre and/or era.
How about; Django Reinhardt - Jazz-40ties
Charlie Christian - Jazz-40ties
Chet Atkins - Counrty-40ties
Les Paul - Country-40ties
Eddie Cochran -The sound behind Elvis's prop guitar
Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck -Neo-classical- 80ties

I am not a guitar officianodo and more inclined to like music for what makes me want to dance or sing along.

Maybe the best guitarist are the instructors here that take the time to share there knowledge with us.

I think this question is a bit up to whom you ask. I honestly don't think their is one "best" guitarist, and I believe the best question to ask is "who is your favorite guitarist?" To simply label one player as the best disregards the wide variety of guitarists out there, and bear in mind the wide variety of guitarists that you may not have heard of yet.

So, to answer that question; my favorite guitarists are Bill Frisell, Jeff Parker, Nels Cline, Michael Hedges, Adrian Belew, Tommy Emmanuel, John Mayer, John Scofield, Tim Young, and Kaki King. There are many more to this list but this will do it.

Keep an open mind and seek out some new sounds out there.

my favorite guitarist is Johhny Greenwood from radiohead...but that doesn't make him the "technical best" and I really don't care who is because their music most likely sucks
