Hello everyone, I am from Ohio 51 years old and my new years resolution is to become much better at playing guitar. I recently lost my job and have alot of time now to put towards learning something I love. I have been a visitor for some time and have been a member for about a month. I have been around and involved in music for close to 30 years as a live, recording audio engineer... Graduate of (The Recording Workshop) as well as being employed in the CD/DVD replication business. I really don't have a natural talent for playing guitar and up til now haven't had the time to dedicate to it. In the last month I have been through Chris's Fundamentals 1&2 and I'm looking forward to moving forward. I like Classic Rock and Blues mostly with a touch of jazz guitar. The songs I've learned have been CR but when I just play it is Blues that come from the soul. Right now I'm trying to learn how to build chords. The original stuff I come up with, chord wise, isn't always your run of the mill C,D,A stuff and I can't always figure them out with the info I have found. I tried searching this site with "Chord Building" didn't find anything that would tell me what I need. as an Example: Bar all strings at 5th fret, then fret the A string at the 7th fret(E) strum all. Probably an easy one to figure out but not for a this newb. Any suggestion on were to look? I'd like to be able to get all my info from Guitar Tricks, that way I don't waste time searching and it should allow for continuity in learning. I hope that is what the forums is for, to ask questions like this. I did ask this question on one of the other threads yesterday but no responses at this time. Thanks! to the admin/moderators for running a very cool site.

Hey and welcome.

In GF 2 there was a tutorial on chord building. Essentially you need to find the 1st, major 3rd or minor 3rd & 5th. Then you need to factor in other tones as relative intervals from the root (4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, etc.).

Try this tutorial that lists all possible chromatic intervals. The images & ideas in those lessons will enable you to identify & name any and all chords.

That is an A minor 7th chord.

Major, minor & dominant 7th chords are covered here:

I recently reshot these (with expanded content dealing with all other 7th chord types). Hopefully I will edit & render it in the next month or so.

This tutorial might also be helpful, it is a brief intro to music theory.

Hope this helps. Please ask more as necessary! :)
