A semitone is another term for half step. In other words a semitone equals a distance of 1 fret on a guitar.

9 semitones equals 9 frets. From the open E string to the 9th fret is an example:

E to F (1 half step)
F to F# (1 half step)
F# to G (1 half step)
G to G# (1 half step)
G# to A (1 half step)
A to A# (1 half step)
A# to B (1 half step)
B to C (1 half step)
C to C# (1 half step)

From E to C# is 9 half steps, or semitones. Or 5 and one half steps (5 whole steps and one additional half step). Or a major 6th. :)
[QUOTE=gmixstudios]so from a G flat to a D sharp

Is also 9 half steps.

Gb to G (1 half step)
G to Ab (1 half step)
Ab to A (1 half step)
A to Bb (1 half step)
Bb to B (1 half step)
B to C (1 half step)
C to Db (1 half step)
Db to D (1 half step)
D to D# (1 half step)

Make sense?

No not really I thought the other example was a 6th

I am going to have to re look ok the ones that had me stumped were

g flat - D sharp

and g sharp - d flat - which i think is a perfect 4th?

G to d is a 5th

to d sharp is aug 5th?

to d flat is dim 5th?

it then says Maj and Min intervals but I thought Maj was a Maj 3rd and Min was a flattened 3rd?

confused!!

Let's start over. Look here:

In those lessons you will find all the answers you need.

Yes, also called a minor 6th.

Yes, also called a sharp 4th.

The 3rd, 6th and 7th scale degrees can all be major or minor. Look at the list of intervals on the second lesson of my intervals tutorial:

Better?

It is part of a minor scale.

E |--------------|
B |--------------|
G |--------------|
D |--------------|
A |-7-5-3-2------|
E |--------------|

E - D - C - B are part of an E minor scale.

E (1st)
D (minor 7th)
C (minor 6th)
B (5th)

Or part of a B minor scale if you put the lick on the E string.

E |--------------|
B |--------------|
G |--------------|
D |--------------|
A |--------------|
E |-7-5-3-2------|

B - A - G - F# are part of a B minor scale.

B (1st)
A (minor 7th)
G (minor 6th)
F# (5th)

Make sense?

After you go through the Intervals tutorial (you did that right?), then go on to the tutorials on Major Scale and Minor Scale theory. All part of GF2 Chapter 1.
