Reading standard notation would help you in the long term but you don't NEED to just to play the tunes you like.
If you can find tabs that also have the lyrics sort of following along with the tab that will also give you a hint as to where to change chords etc...
Some of the guitar mags publish the tab with the rhythm...again you will need some basic education on reading music to understand what you are looking at.
