If you love to play then the answer is right there, it would be a real shame to push away that urge to play. Even though you may never reach your former playing level there's still plenty in there to keep the desire to play alive, just be realistic about what you're hoping to get out of it. Once you get back into it you may just hit a previously untapped seam of creativity, you never know!

I keep coming back for more even though I sometimes find it tough going because to not play just wouldn't sit easy with me.

Having been in a band in the 60's you've got some great history, kudos to you there. I'm sure you can keep on getting a buzz out of it for many years.
