Why aren't these people in jail? Besides that they are in China...

It's like a Chinese eBay. Free shipping, Les Paul with Gibson logos all over it for $360....
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

I think you nailed it right there: they are effectively in jail, one of the world's largest, by being in China.

Something that sticks me as being really unfortunate about this is, someone will eventually put that on eBay, someone who does not know any better will probably pay out the butt for it.

True. And how would you know? I think it's good advice to get and check the serial # before making a significant guitar purchase off Ebay. Although, who's to say they didn't copy those either.

Interesting read. It's quite stand-up of Gibson Service to review pics of used guitars as well.

I'm not saying they aren't stand-up people, but in this case I would have to say they are the ones most damaged by counterfeiting, so anything they can do to stop it would be in their own self-interest. After all, the buyer might be out a few hundred bucks, but counterfeiters could be costing Gibson a thousand times that or more.

I have always been amazed that somewhere in the world men were kissing their wives goodbye, patting their kids on the head as they head out to work at the fake Rolex factory... or in this case the fake Gibson factory.

;)
I play a cheap electric guitar.

These fake Gibsons are also ending up on Craigslist. Guitars are not the only thing China fakes. Books, technology, movies, and music of any and all kinds are freely copied and sold with impunity. Saudi Arabia is another place where copyrights and trademarks mean nothing.

It is no wonder China has a growing economy. They steal intellectual property from the free world and reproduce it using slave labor. Hello profit...goodbye royalty payments.

Being in to 80s Ibanez guitars, I've also seen my share of fakes on ebay. Buyer beware I guess, and always if a deal seems to good to be true it probably is. We all know what the gear we lust after costs, and with very few exceptions that's what we will have to pay.

The only time I ever got a bargain was buying a JS1000 for next to nothing - it was in a pawn shop with a bunch of $100 no-name copy guitars and they didn't know what it was. I still spent a very anxious 20 mins checking the serial number and hoping nobody else would see it there...:)

I live near the Aston Martin factory, and they've recently started having trouble with a Chinese company copying their cars.... !

I do however love the ads - 'We are pleased to present this outstanding piece of traditional craftsmanship, lovingly made to exacting Standards... the 1959 Gribstein Los Pail Standard in Emerald sparkle metallic'.... mmmmm.... I can feel the paint coming away in my hand and the tuners slipping already.

Hopefully if you're going to spend a pile of money on a guitar you know enough to know whhat you're looking at. And if not, perhaps it's worth putting off the purchase until you do.

I fell for it . A person named Bing offered a Gibson SG junior and a Gibson Classic with cases SHIPPED for $650. He showed me pictures of the real thing. I payed him with paypal. I requested pictures of the guitars he was sending me. These pictures showed 2 piece neck 3 piece body's. Pick guards wrong shape. Pickups in the wrong space. Body wrong shape. I am currently in dispute with pay-pal. I still have no received the guitars and I doubt i ever will. I just want my money back.

Silly me,

I don't know that I will ever buy on a chance. Deals scare me if I can't validate and people on craigslist and eBay concern me when it comes to easily counterfit-able and expensive items.

It will cost more but I would by from a known dealer and pay the extra and be comfortable knowing that I do have the real thing.

That's the way I'm feeling since seeing all that. I had no idea it was going on and I would have easily been suckered! Probably would never have known the difference until years later when someone pointed it out.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

I can't help but look for amusement once in a while. Here's a good one:

Truss rod cover says Les Paul Standard. Check out the Single Coils hehe.

Wow,I'm not familiar enough with the Les paul to spot the fake one... I had an epiphone les paul copy once, but I didn't have it long,it was years ago.

I prefer to buy from music stores in the area. I can see what i want, play the guitar, and get good service. Sometimes the lowest price is not the best idea.

The sales people are very helpful and know what's working for people who play in bands, etc..

Always capitalize "BLUES"

Fake guitars are pretty common these days - Remember with the biggies(Fenders and Gibsons) get the serial number as you can contact the company easily and they can tell you alot about the guitar(Serial number designates model, color, etc so you can see if they match what is being pictured).
"I learned a long time ago that one note can go a long way if its the right one and it will probably whip the guy with 20 notes." Les Paul - 2002

It's just that this one is so friggin' obvious! unless... Did they ever make a single coil version of a Les Paul?? Closest thing I know of is a long discontinued Epiphone model.
