How do you know good bass strings?

I just got my bass neck fixed and had it restrung with a set of Austin City Medium gauge strings. Im used to using light gauge and while the tone is good, they just dont seem to feel right when i hit a note. Any reasons why that might be? Besides the fact they are a size up. To me it seems like the fret board is trying to like reject them or something.
