Ok I need bare basics videos explaining harmonics. Most tutorials are a little more advanced than my experience at the moment. I cant seem to wrap it around my head so to speak.

Pinch Harmonics such as like Zakk Wylde?

First, to make the harmonic; right after your pick strikes the string, the flesh of your thumb needs to lightly contact the string too. Because this is all done in one motion, the sound you get is instantaneous.

Now, how you hold the pick is important. I like Dunlop Jazz III's because they are small and allow for things like pinch harmonics to happen easily. The point is that you can't have too much of your pick sticking out (like you would if you were full strumming an acoustic). The tip of the pick should be only what's showing. This allows for the string, after being struck by the pick, to recoil back and graze the flesh of your thumb as it passes the string.

Now, even if the technique of the thumb is down cold, where you string the string with the pick matters too. Due to length of the neck, there are certain harmonic 'hot spots' that get that desired wailing sound. Exactly where that is somewhat depends on the scale of your next if only a little. Most often, the most used hot spot is just in front of the bridge pick up when striking the low E.

However, there are others and I'd suggest that once you get the thumb technique down, try to find the other spots on the Low E and on the other strings.

Truly, once you get down the thumb technique, finding the hot spots and using the skill is very easy.

Hope that helps.
