I was into KoRn before they went MTV and started pushing their CD's to 10-year olds and went into the whole "ISSUES" thing and helped to do their part to make depression and suffering "cool."Slipknot, I never listened too much, after I saw an interview w/them.
It's strange how I

in this world you have to don't you. It's a trip how I used to not like Korn or Nirvana...Nor really accept them it just kind of grew on me.
I don't know what I trip on sometimes. But I dig the guitar man.

I used to like Korn way back. Even before their CD was out a friend brought over a bootleg cassette he had, and loved it. Their first album was great, saw them live while touring with their first CD. And after that it slowly went downhill. Bought life is peachy and that was the last CD I bought. I can still listen to that first CD all the time. I'M SO BLIND!!!!! ahhh.. good stuff.

As for linkin park, they are ok. Compared to most of the crap out nowdays, I can listen to it. Slipknot has some songs I like, but even more that are a little too hardcore for me :D

Ok, first of all, we need to work on your grammar. Just kidding . . .

I can't remember who said it, but one of the members here compared Linkin Park to NSync and the BSBs. He said that they were basically NSync with guitars.

I agree with him to a point, in that LP is basically just a prefab boy band with guitars and rapping instead of off-key 4 part harmonies, but I have to say that they've got some good songs and some great rhythms. Example - Points of Authority, what a great song, and a pretty ingenious rhythm on the bass and guitar.

I guess the point is that I like to listen to their tunes now and then, but not enough to pay to see them in concert.

Yeah, you better make sure that your entry has a bunch of insane shredding, or else you will lose. You see, they like that kind of stuff over there.

I think guitarists knock bands like Linkin Park because their music is really basic and relatively easy to play. If you have become a proficient guitar player, you don't find their music (or other bands like them) very challenging. I agree with Christoph. I'll listen to their music now and then when it comes on the radio, but I probably would never buy their CDs.

But as guitar players, we cannot forget that bands like Linkin Park inspire many people to start playing the guitar BECAUSE their songs are so easy to play. I think that is a good thing. I'm sure all of us can think back to the first song or riff that we ever learned to play. I would bet that it was not Yngwie Malmsteen's Blackstar.

I remember being in a garage band when I was a kid and torturing my neighbors with a 90 minute rendition of Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. Not the whole song mind you, just that beginning riff with several very bad attempts at guitar and drum solos. As awful as that probably sounded( we did tape it --that how I know it was 90 minutes), that was some of the most fun that I can remember having playing guitar. If Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etc...inspire others to get into a band, pick up a guitar, and play I think that is a pretty good starting point.

trebledamage: my first "real" song was highway star, from the machine head album, which you probably know if you know smoke on the water...
so why people cant start with things like highway star or smoke on the water?! you can realy learn things from highway star, but what can you learn from linking park?
besides in my opinion the problem is that in the 70's many things were invented, many different styles and great guitarists arived from no where, and everyone of them was a genious. in the 80's the people were inspired by the 70's so there were few people who took the playing to a new level, like malmsteen and others.
in the 90's we had the nirvana syndrome, and now you have 100000s of bands like linkin park who think that punk is the best style ever, most of them probably havent even heard a decent solo in their life, because there are no good solos in punk, if any at all, and the guitar playing is dying slowly, day after day.
if this thing wont stop as soon as posible, in another 4-5 years a "rock" band will be a drummer a bass player, singer and a d.j.

Don't get me wrong. Linkin Park won't be putting on any guitar clinics anytime soon and Limp Bizkit could replace Wes Borland with a potted plant and not skip a beat. I'm just saying that while musicians can look at those bands as being extremely unchallenging or untalented, other people just starting out might view their songs as something within their playing capabilities. So while I'm not a real big Linkin Park fan, I can still look at them objectively and say that they serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

As for whether the Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park trend will continue, I think people will get tired of hearing the same tuned down 'drop D' chords played over and over again eventually. Something different will find its way back into the mainstream.

Oh yeah and by the way, shred doesn't always win on gwar dude. The biggest record ever in Pro War was from a guy called JazzPick, with a song called Samba with Dobeedo.

My average is actually pretty high there (probably just luck), but that shows ya you dont need shred to win, as I cant shred lol! :)

Fist off, what the hell does Linkin Park have to do with punk? Even Limp Bizcut; neither of them sound remotely punk, and neither really have much in common outside of the "rap rock" association.

As for Linkin Park specificly, I've listened to an entire album (a guy I work with listens to them). I can say three things about them: 1). I didn't find it very interesting. 2). Having the guitarist do almost all of the bass tracks was pretty lame - get a bassist. 3). They have their own sound, don't copy anybody, and actually manage to stand out a bit in the modern musical scene.

The sum of all of that is that I try and not say anything about them, I don't like it but that doesn't make them bad. They just aren't my thing.

.... hmmmm... I dont understand this ill feeling towards linkin park... personally i dont like them out of my own taste... nothing to do with teh dj, or the simple guitar...(to be honest I think it's teh screaming in tune that treally kills it for me)...

Music is about feeling... it's not about having solos like deep purple's hiway star and hawk wind's "master of the univere"... If that your thing, there's no problem with it...
about the nirvana thing... The band that really stared of the simple power chord rock were black sabath (take off the solos, and you'd have 3 minutes of mostly power chords)... I think "paranoid" was possibly one of the first things that I learnt... I dont think, looking back for the charts as far as i can go back, that the main stream was ever the source of good gutiar music... I mean there were a few short bursts...

Poneyone: I've already mentioned this band in another thread... but I'll say it again... Idlewild are a great band for angst... Their early stuff from the "captain" ep (just do a search for it on Cd now, for the track listings, and get some of the suff)... and some of their stuff from "hope is important"...

Hey Partner..so your checking out this site too. That's cool ...guitar ...it's a trip. That guitar war site brings me back to the days I used to buy every guitar playing mag I could get.I love that guitar war I hope in the futchure of Rock'n'Roll one of the next big famous bands has a really hot guitarest.I hope Jazz starts to become more appreciated too.(At least some of the style and finesse of it.)Not that I can play it worth a damn 'Yet'but I sure want to.I love that Wes Montgomery then the clean smooth stuff like Allan Holdsworth has.Frank Gambale's unreal. But' then again I allways get baffeled by a sweet bend...or a nice groove.Anyway just over analizing. Thanks for reading my comments. Someone spoke of Guitar Wars earlier. Let me tell you a story...I was King Shred on my block. 15 years a vigorous training under my belt...basically...I was the bomb. I went to L.A. Guitar Wars thinking I could hold my own against most people there...?...What was I thinking?! A 17 year old kid from Nebraska put me under hack as soon as I made an attempt at sweeps. This kid was clean, fast, smooth and above all - pleasant to listen to. 17 YEARS OLD!!! I talked to him later that night and found out that he'd been playing only 5 years...I had 15 under my belt. This kid smoked me very early on. He ended up loosing to some speed demon from hell.

The moral of my story...If you ever meet a dude named Tommy from Nebraska...and he just so happens to be playing a slime-green Ibanez Universe...break his guitar and tell him to get back to the corn fields!

It was a good experience for me. I would advise anyone to go. But, I would suggest watching the first year and entering the second time if you had the guts, talent aand work ethic. It is a major task my friend.

Sorry, guys if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm just sharing a story...PEACE!
