are there any free computer programmes which will allow me to record my guitar to my computer, and is it possible to record from the guitar straight to the computer without using a pre-amp or modeller or something?

The guitar is an unpowered instrument, so you won't hear much of anything if you go direct to the computer without an amp. Hook up your guitar up as usual to your amp, then run a cable from the mic out to the line-in on your soundcard. You'll probably need an adapter to go from 1/4 to 1/8, unless you have a Live drive or something along those lines.

Try Sound Forge.
I think it's the best.
After recording you can use the effects lik Wah-Wah, Distorsion, Delay, Noise Gate etc.
I think it's better to record with amp and mic instead of "direct" recording in sound card
