I'm not familar with the GRX 40, I have a catalog with a GRX20Z in it, what kind of pickup combination does it have? What? in your opinion would be a better sound? Hotter, more highs etc?... do you know how to solder? and how to use a ohm meter?

(not the same model) and found it was ok for sounds, didnt piss about with it till the warranty was out though.
Ok, my point -i think that this is a nice beginners guitar and your best choice for getting different sounds is to get an effects unit such as a zoom505.
Try a friends amp,try a wah pedal, try a preamp, try different pedals from friends -'cause otherwise youre probably into getting new pickups, which can be a pain to fit and will probably cost you as much as the guitar did originally.
Effects units are good (not perfect) way to change your sound and cost a hell of a lot less than pickups, plus when you trade in/up you can keep the unit..
Good Luck.
