I've recently started playing again, (lost my guitar in a house fire), and I'm finding after i play for about half an our, the strings are leaving indents in my fingers making it hard to switch notes and hold the properly, not only is this frustrating, it sounds horrible. is there any thing i can do to make my finger tips either softer or harder? does this make any sense to anyone?

thanks for reading..
Sean.

Hi... this is a common occurrence and you basically just need to push through it until you start to develop calluses on your fingertips.
This usually involves getting deep ruts in your fingers at first. Then gradually finding yourself peeling damaged skin off. Then as the finger starts to heal, it builds up to almost a harder skin of it's own.
I go through it every time I pick up an acoustic guitar after playing electric for a few months. For the first few days my fingers are killing me.
But you just keep torturing yourself until the fingers start to peel. Within a couple of days it's gotten a little better. By the end of the week, you're wondering why it was hurting so much when you first started.

yup...
its like working out
its a GOOD pain....lololol....
the pain will go away and instead of muscles though you'll have callused fingertips to show off all your hard work!!!!

I am kinda proud of mine.....keeps me in check with playing....if my fingertips get soft I know Im not playing enough!!!

Just be sure that you don't play until you get a little blister. When I re-started playing, I made the mistake of playing like I used to (or tried) and overdid it and got a nice little blister on the tip of my middle finger. Tat will stop you for a week. Play through the dents but take due care.
