Any progressive band to suggest?

Hi,

I am always willing to get to know new band. My favorite band ever is Dream Theater but usually I am open to any styles. However the current thread is about band suggestions in progressive genre.

Listening to new music is always refreshing. So if you know some bands sounding like Dream Theater, Nightwish, Symphony X, Rush, etc. go ahead and let me know what it is.

I know that Google and sites like allmusic.com is a good way to get answers like the current one but it's always interesting to ask the question on a guitarists forum.

John Petrucci of Dream Theater has said that one of his biggest influences was "RUSH". You might want to check them out. They have a LOOOOOOOONG history. They've been around since the 1970's

Of course I know Rush as a progressive music fan. Not as much as I wanted to but I know them. See that I come from Quebec Canada and Rush are canadian! I am proud, lol! I have 2 DVDs and the last album Snakes&Arrows (even if they release records since 1970's!). Never been a big listener of Rush but I like their kind of music. By the way, John Petrucci and Dream Theater big influences was Rush, you're right.

The original progressive death metal band was Nocturnus, check out their 2nd album 'Thresholds'. If you don't mind death vox then you'll love this album, the guitar work is incredible - two very musical shredders and they also had a keyboard (shock horror! - remember this was about 15+ years ago). They were way ahead of their time and didn't really make it big because at the time most guys thought having keyboards in metal was 'gay' or something - total pity because this band really kicked ass. If you like Thresholds then you should also check out their debut 'The Key'.
Another equally talented and more pgressive DM band is Cynic (although their latest release is not DM at all). Check out their debut 'Focus' it's noted for being one of the best undergound metal albums of all time. As far as other heavier bands go you could check Atheist 'Unquestionable Presence', Pestilence 'Possessed' and anything by Death from Spiritual Healing on (one of the best Death albums was 'Human' - Chuck was backed up by the guys from Cynic on this recording).
The last two Symphony X albums are excellent, plus you could check out Spiral Architect's 'Sceptics Universe'. Never really liked Dream Theatre, the singer does nothing for me and I think Petrucci sounds so much better in his instrumental prog band Liquid Tension Experiment. Queen were very prog at the time and their stuff still rocks,

Not Prog but you need to check out Steve Stevens. One of the most amazing guitars players I've seen. Considering his known reume is Billy Idol and Vince Neil, so many would write him off. Don't. So Good.

Here a YouTube link of an acountic/flamenco-sih deal he did. It's tasty and he has a few jaw droppers in there too. (Also note that Derek Sherinian is keyboarding towards the end.

While it can get pretty odd, I'd check out Bozzio Levin Stevens on Magna Carta. Good stuff.

It's true that John Petrucci rocks in LTE. But with Dream Theater he rocks as much in my opinion. Look for Live at Budokan DT's DVD. Amazing peformance from the whole band and especially Petrucci.

Nice video. I see that Steve Stevens is a brilliant guitarist. Notice that he's playing in this video with a Godin guitar which is made in the province of Quebec. I am proud again! I read that those guitars rocks. It's expensive too.

May I suggest you take a look at the DPRP (Dutch Progressive Rock Pages)?

If you look at a reviews summary (e.g. here's 2008 ) you'll see that, in addition to reviewing all types of Prog, we sometimes do ProgMetal specials, which may help you find some new bands.

..also, check out some old Fates Warning for some fairly straight ahead prog-oriented stuff. Kings X for some tasty stuff.
