Hey John
Im fairly new to the site too...great place
In terms of playing guitar....I think its totally different for everyone...some pick it up really fast and some just go at a snails pace....I think some are born with music in their head ( lucky them ) ...and some who work hard for their ability to play the littlest thing
I think they key is practice...work hard at what you want to achieve out of it
and dont give up. Im working on setting up a practice schedule right now to give me something to focus on
im sure the instructors here will be of great help
good luck and keep us posted

I have been playing for about 5 months now and am just now very comfortable with fundamentals 2. I also play acoustic but I did break down and get a hollow body guitar. There are 2 main differences I see between acoustic and electric. First one is the action on the electric is much lower. The other is with just a little bit of effects mistakes are easily covered up in other words the acoustic is a little less forgiving "in my opinion".
However I love the sound of an acoustic guitar. I like just being able to pick it up and play without fiddling with this or that. So to answer your question it took me about 5 months to feel like yeah now I am getting somewhere hahaha. I am probably much slower than most folks as I practice everyday sometimes for a few hours (this includes reading not just playing). Now that I can switch chords easily I am trying different strumming patterens. Also still working on learning scales and positions and how chords are formed.
When I started I didn't know anything and just about everything I learned was here at GT. The best advice that I can give is go slow and make sure you can not only play the lessons in the fundamental courses but also that you understand them. I breezed through the first time then I did it again and really took my time. There is a lot to absorb there in addition to being able to just play the stuff.
If you really want to learn to play its not hard even when it is haha. I am only now "sometimes" getting frustrated with something hard. Aside from that F chord I really have been having too much fun to become frustrated. Don't hesitate to ask as many questions as you want. Most of all have fun with it,
Ed

Hey John,
The electric would have lower action, but I love the acoustic too. Your fingers will definitely be a little sore from the acoustic, or the electric. Just remember when your fingers get sore, it's ok to put it down for a while. If they are really sore, wait a day before you try it again. Don't wait a week though, or any callouses you started building will be gone.
