I can't seem to get my guitar to make that rock sound that Chris has in his instructional videos. What pick ups should I be using and what settings should I put my high, mid, and low at? I have a 3 pick up guitar, kind of like the Fender strat, they're single coil I believe. Any advice would be appreciated, and try to avoid the change the brand, type, etc, I'm not that advanced yet. Thanks in advance.

What equipment do you have? What is the amp, do you have any effect pedals. What kind of guitar is it?

My amp is a Vibe 30W. I don't have any pedals and the guitar is a 3 pick-up Redfox.

Real hard to say given the lack of specific detail on the setup (probably hard to find out the exact pickup model etc and I have no experience with either you're amp or make of guitar).
However, for a very general setting for rock... try putting everything to about 3/4 then start tweaking from there - also, you the bridge pickup (the one furthest from the headstock). Distortion doesnt have to be up at full either, it took me 15 years of playing before I realised and accepted what older players were saying - rock sounds heavier and cleaner when the gain/distortion is up to a max of 2/3 on the dial.
You'll probably get better results by getting a Boss distortion or overdrive pedal - they're pretty cheap too at around $30 on E-Bay.
Hope that helps!

Alright thanks for the help. I have one more question however. My amp has a pre-gain dial and a post-gain dial. Should one be higher than the other?

Typically you will set the amount of Gain (distortion) with the "Pre" control and the actual volume with the "Post". For a Hi-Gain "Rock/Metal" tone during a typical, low-level practice session at home w/a 30watt amp...You would most likely be cranking the "Pre" gain anywhere from 6-10 (depending on how much gain you want) and the "Post" gain down in the 2-4(5) range (depending on how loud you can be).
That's just for your basic, straight up preamp distortion, as your primary source of gain. If you are using any Overdrive/Distortion pedal in front of the amp as you main source of Gain, then you would probably be dropping that Pre-gain considerably and maybe bumping up the Post a bit. Again...totally depending on the pedal/amp setup that you are using.

Hopefully that's a little bit on the helpful side for ya.
