I am having a very hard time doing upstrokes. I can do downstrokes fine. For the C and G chord lesson in the begginer's course, Chris states in the description to try it upwards. I can't. I always end up hitting the other strings, or it doesn't come off as one simultaneous strum. What technique would a person try if they want to work on their upstrokes? Thanks.

Hi Mike-

I have a beginners tutorial on strumming, with a segment specifically focussed on upstrokes. Even though it is named "acoustic strumming", the principles apply to electric strumming as well.

While it sounds like your skills may already be a little more advanced than this tutorial, it might be worth going back to the basics for a minute to see if you can nail the technique. Once it clicks into gear, you should be good to go.

Here is the first lesson in the tutorial, just to get you started. It's the second lesson in this series that introduces the upstroke.

Thanks alot! Little did I know that an actual instructor would reply! I'm getting a little better at upstrokes, but I always feel the need to rush myself. I watched the whole beginners course before even picking up the guitar! I want to be like Malmsteen, Hammett, E.V.H., or my idol Dimebag Darrell, but I can't do that until I learn the basics. I will spend every chance I get on this site, and seeing as how I practice about 6-8 hours every day, I should have this down in no time! Thanks alot once again. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again!
