Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me exactly WHAT Mark Tremonti is doing in the song Down to My Last by Alter Bridge...there is a sweet little fill he does on the guitar right after the line "Love is to shine, in your world, blind" at 2:20. Some kind of descending harmonic run... check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R4td4tg1gs. How is this done? Thanks in advance.

Check out this video. It's a cover of the same song. Is that what you're talking about?

Okay, here's what I'm hearing in the song...it sounds like Tremonti rams through a bunch of descending artificial harmonic notes. In the Youtube video, the player is attempting to emulate the same notes by simply playing those notes normally. I'm wondering, how would one reproduce that amazing run of harmonics...is Tremonti laying a finger across the fretboard and picking the strings, or is he creating them by hitting the strings with his picking hand? I can't figure out how to produce such a flurry of harmonics!

Naturally, he never plays the same fills twice in this song, so I am unable to find a live video of him doing this particular fill!

Well, I think I'm going to solve this once and for all...I'm just going to email Tremonti and ask him. My wife and I met the band in May and we have their contact info. I think he'd help my cause. Still, though, if anyone has any idea how he does this, I probably won't hear back for quite a while, as they are on the road right now. Thanks again!

It sounds like he's playing it straight to me... possibly with just a hint of thumb to get a slight harmonic... but through the speakers in this laptop it just sounds like pick attack to me.

I'm not sure he's using harmonics in that run at all, but if he is to do it that fast they'd have to be pinch harmonics...
