What kind of guitar is it that you have? A classical guitar has a very wide neck, a western-style acoustic has a thinner neck, an electric guitar has an even thinner neck (in many cases)... there's lots of different kinds of guitar, so if you really want to learn and the neck is too wide for you, you might consider going and having a look at the different types there are available.
